Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (born February 3, 1898 in Kuortane, Finland, † May 11, 1976 in Helsinki, Finland), was a Finnish architect and designer. Alvar Aalto became known for his special conceptions in the field of organic construction. He was influenced by the German Werkbund and Bauhaus. This Bauhaus two colors wooden chair was designed in 1931 by Finnish Bauhaus designer Alvar Aalto for the tuberculosis sanatorium Piamio in Finland. The comfortable armchair offered the patient a relaxed posture and is known until today as Piamio armchair.
